I thought someone had a gun and had caused the horde of people surrounding them to frenzy. I rose out of my bed and opened my door to see a mass of people in the parking lot running around like crazed lunatics screaming "yay Obama" over and over again. Girls were doing flips and guys were throwing their arms into the air and hollaring.
I laid back down, and contemplated what had just occured. Never, in all my time, had I seen such commotion over a presidential election. Yet, I fell to sleep, knowing that tomorrow would hold a bit more peace.
I was so wrong. This morning as soon as I walked through the threshold of my door, I heard it multiple times, yet again. I was getting annoyed, but began to look for patterns.
This is what I found:
1)Living in a rural part of Mississippi for the majority of my life, where my entire school was caucasian, including staff, I had never been around African Americans. When arriving at college, around many diverse groups, I found that a majority of African Americans are very outspoken and loud about their beliefs. Saying that, it is difficult not to overhear the conversations that occur between them. I heard multiple times that people didn't know what Obama stood for, but only voted for him because he was black (which, by the way, he is not completely African American).
2)On my way home in the car on Sunday, I was going through radio stations when I stopped on a rap station. I overheard a radio host discussing his thoughts and said "It is time for us to stand up for ourselves, and elect a nigger to the office. Get out there and vote my people." I found this racial comment offensive and stupid. I feel that a lot of African Americans did vote for Obama only because of his race, and that is not right. These uninformed voters should have stayed at home.
But I didn't support either candidate completely. I was indifferent as to the outcome, however, I feel that the only reason it came out as it did was due to the race of the candidates, and not because of what they stood for.
Many of my friends are discussing moving to different countries, because they fear for this one. I don't know if I would take it to the extent of moving, but I am afraid that something bad might happen...
That's just a thought though.
